Russia to sell seized BTC: After the US comes the next step in the cryptocurrency arena
The Russian Ministry of Finance is preparing to sell bitcoin (BTC) seized as part of an investigation into the hacking group Infraud. The move comes at a time when Russia has begun using Bitcoin in foreign trade, indicating growing confidence in cryptocurrencies in the global market.
According to Russian news agency TASS, the Finance Ministry plans to liquidate a total of 1,032 bitcoins seized in connection with the bribery scandal in 2025. The first expected batch of bitcoins will be worth approximately $10 million.
Interestingly, corrupt official Marat Tambiyev, a former investigator for the Russian Investigative Committee, received these bitcoins directly from the hacker group Infraud in exchange for his services. In 2023, Tambiyev had his cryptocurrency assets seized after he was found guilty of receiving 1,032.1 BTC and sentenced to 16 years in prison.
With the sale of these bitcoins, Russia is not only trying to resolve the issue of the seized assets, but also to strengthen its position in the cryptocurrency field and show that even countries with problematic access to digital currencies are trying to harness their potential. What impact will this move have on the cryptocurrency market and on other countries considering similar steps? That remains a question we will have to wait and see.
