X is heading for a financial revolution: Smart cashtags are just the beginning of an “app for everything”

Social network X is taking its ambitions to a whole new level. The latest step – the launch of smart cashtags in the US and Canada – suggests that Elon Musk’s vision of an “app for everything” is starting to take shape. The platform is gradually transforming from a place for sharing opinions to a comprehensive financial ecosystem.

Cashtags as a gateway to the world of finance

The new feature allows users to easily track stocks and cryptocurrencies directly in the app. Just enter the ticker or address of a smart contract – and after clicking, real-time price charts and relevant posts will appear.

But in Canada, X is going even further. Thanks to a partnership with Wealthsimple, users can trade directly without leaving the platform. In the US, this feature will have to wait for now.

According to product manager Nikita Bier, this is just the first step: X wants to be the main hub for the financial and crypto community.

Towards a “super app”

This step fits into a broader strategy. Musk has long been promoting the transformation of X into a platform that connects social networks, messaging, payments and e-commerce. The inspiration is, among other things, the Chinese WeChat Pay model, which integrates communication and finance into one environment.

Coinbase has a similar ambition, having previously announced plans to create its own “super app”. The trend is clear: digital platforms are trying to unify services into a single user experience.

Web3 ambitions and the fight against cryptobots

According to Tata Thang from Polymarket, X could build a Web3 version of WeChat Pay. Crypto transaction fees could play a key role in this – a more stable source of income than advertising or subscriptions.

Other steps also indicate this:

recruiting experts associated with projects such as Solana or Base

and thoroughly cleaning the platform of fraudulent cryptobots

According to Thang, this is a necessary step: without a safe environment, financial products cannot be introduced for ordinary users.

What comes next?

X plans to expand its features to the web and Android platforms and gradually launch globally. Another key milestone is the anticipated launch of X Money, which will offer peer-to-peer payments, interest-bearing accounts, and a debit card.

Canada serves as a test market—and a glimpse into a future where social media will be more than just a place to communicate, but a full-fledged financial platform.

If Musk’s vision succeeds, X could become one of the most influential apps in the digital economy—a place where conversations, investments, and everyday finance meet.
