Bitcoin mining revolution begins in space: Cheaper, faster, and more ambitious than ever


The future of cryptocurrencies is increasingly associated with technological advancements and innovations that push the boundaries of what is possible. The latest news suggests that this shift may also take place beyond our planet. Starcloud, founded in early 2024, has unveiled an ambitious plan – to start mining Bitcoin in space, under conditions that are both economically and technologically much more advantageous than on Earth.


Cheaper mining thanks to space ASIC chips


Starcloud CEO Philip Johnston revealed that mining Bitcoin on ASIC chips in space is up to 30 times cheaper than on GPUs, with the main advantage being lower energy consumption per kilowatt-hour. While you pay around $1,000 for a kilowatt ASIC with a power of 1 kW, it would be around $30,000 for a comparable GPU. This difference is a key factor that could lead to the mass production and use of space mining stations in the future.


“Bitcoin mining consumes about 20 gigawatts of energy continuously. It makes no sense to do it on Earth because it would be too expensive and unsustainable. In space, it’s a different story,” Johnston said.


Space data centers and satellites


Starcloud is already taking steps to implement its plan. The company has launched a satellite equipped with an NVIDIA H100 graphics processor into orbit, the first time such a powerful GPU has operated in space. The devices are solar-powered and aim to build large-scale data centers in space that could handle not only the energy demands of artificial intelligence, but also cryptocurrency mining.


Sending Bitcoin to Mars and Interplanetary Communications


While Starcloud is thinking about mining Bitcoin in space, other technological pioneers are coming up with ideas for how to move cryptocurrencies between planets. For example, Jose E. Puente and Carlos Puente recently presented the concept of transferring Bitcoin to Mars in just three minutes using NASA’s Starlink optical link and a new interplanetary timestamping system. This would mean that in the future it would be possible not only to mine cryptocurrencies in space, but also to move them quickly and securely between planets.

All of these developments suggest that the boundaries of cryptocurrency mining and management are shifting to space. If the technology proves successful, it could revolutionize the economics of Bitcoin mining, making it not only cheaper but also greener.
